I really liked the weeb-pandering slightly more mature direction Pokemon Black & White was taking the franchise until Pokemon GO came along and returned them to lowest common denominator.
Anyone else feel that tonal shift or was it just me?

B2W2 was the peak tone for the franchise. It all went downhill with XY, even though that still somewhat had a remnant of that late teens feel to it.

I don't blame Go so much as the people who bitched about not getting to use oldmons before the endgame, it lead directly to gen 6s pandering with shit like the Viridian Forest transplant and Kanto starter handouts

That trailer and the Generations episodes were a-lot more compelling than the game itself. Neo Plasma were like comedy villains most of the time.

I don't think Unova was gritty. The grittiest games would be Sinnoh (not that Pokémon was ever really gritty). The slightly more mature tone Unova gives off stems from its more developed story and the characters who give off an urban feel to the games (especially in B2W2). Think of Unova like the Bleach of the series. The other regions barring Sinnoh feel more like Naruto/One Piece.
