Can confirm. Ruby was my first game and like many shitters, I basically just went through the game exclusively using my starter, sceptile. And that went fine until I ran into Drake and got filtered hard by almost his entire team having a 4x resistance to grass along with plenty of SE attacks against it.

Emerald's version of Tate&Liza.

The gym itself, while simple, is still hell to fight through, and then even when you get to the actual gym battle they have pretty good coverage against water, which was their main weakness in RS, and extremely common.

Gotta say, that fight went from being "Enter battle, use Surf once, win" to a real struggle even when you're prepared.

I was born in 89 and never would have finished most of my games without all the magazine guides I bought and subscribed to lol.
It's more of a chore now than anything since you have to look it up online and scrolling and avoiding ads on a screen is much more of a pain in the ass and soulless than flipping pages in a guide.

Explorers of the sky is on a total different level compared to the others and maybe any pokemon game of the mainline, mechanics are almost the same as the other dungeons but the story is actually pretty good and there is a lot to do post game.

It took me a long time to do the ice puzzles in Gen 2 as a kid (I was like idk maybe 7 years old or so I think)
I can barely even remember that one from later gen, I've done so many ice sliding puzzles in various games now it's not usually a problem.

I can't even begin to describe how many hours I spent grinding literally everything just to optimize encounter time, they give you no fucking breathing room whatsoever if you're doing it all alone.
Got filtered on either the late Dark Temple stages or the Light Temple itself, then I gave up outright.

This thing probably filtered a lot of kids, and it had me stuck for a long time as well; the first time I encountered this thing and it had my whole team paralysed by fear, it scared me and I avoided Lavender Town entirely, even after getting the Silph Scope, meaning for the longst time I was stuck and unable to get past the two Snorlax because I didn't have the pokeflute. I guess I either didn't pay attention when they said that the Silph Scope let you see ghosts, or I was just too scared to go back, but eventually I did, mainly because i'd tried literally everything else to get past the Snorlax with no luck (including going into the bag and "tossing" a pokeball out while stood in front of the Snorlax, thinking that would catch it.)

For me it was the Primal Dialga fight in Explorers, obviously it can be cheesed if you know what you’re doing but it reamed me decent as a kid.

Although losing to Jirachi after dozens of Wish Cave attempts in RRT has the honor of being the only time I’ve ragequit a game so hard that I never picked it up again.
