How about Rivals?
Gen 1: Smug little prick, yet is never too cruel. Definitely is "friends" with you, as shown in Masters with Red and Blue's relationship.
Gen 2: Admittedly still a smug little prick, but he now has depth due to his father being the leader of a crime organization. He physically abuses the player by pushing them out of the way. He is the antithesis of his father, because Giovanni believes in the power of unity(that's why he runs an organization), while he believes in strength being contained within oneself and oneself only. He changes near the end to become more compassionate towards his mons. Whether he is a good character or not is subjective and not related to this discussion. He is, however, less subjectively different from Blue.
Gen 3: I honestly don't care about Brendan/May, but they are different as well. If you check May's quotes in the games, you can see that she's "quirky," saying things like "Heeeeeeey!"(Silver would never say that to you) and joking that you already beat the league upon reaching the league.
Gen 4: Barry is extremely impatient, and he is a childhood friend of the protag. He nearly gets hurt by going into tall grass without a pokemon, and he constantly knocks into you. He trains a lot, since he wants to be like his dad, who he seems to have a good relationship with when you see them at the Battle Frontier.
Gen 5: Bianca is stupid and dorky. I can't stand her. She actually does get development in Nimbasa city, when her father tries to keep her at home, and she tells him that she'd rather get hurt on her adventure and experience life than be stuck at home.
Cheren is never antagonistic. Whenever he challenges the player, it's to get stronger and actually gauge your ability. There is no hostility between you and him, since he readily pairs up with you for double battles several times across the story.
Gen 6 and on kinda sucks
