How do you use a 6 pokemon team before Gen 6? There's not just 8 HMs but also no team exp share and if you only fight trainer battles thats barely enough exp to keep 3 pokemon more or less close to their levels. Do you just grind wild pokemon for hours in a run?

If you use decent pokemon and have good movesets, team composition, etc. you can win with a significant level disadvantage. I beat the level 60 Ultra Necrozma with its stat aura when my highest team member was 49.

I dont have an answer but I never struggled before the exp all and still dont when I go back to older games. I also dont get pissy like most for it existing in current and welcome it open. What I have not experienced is exp all plus exp charm that seems like overkill.

I remember beating the elite four in Emerald as a kid with a severely underleveled team by relying heavily on full restores and revives. If you think earlier games are too hard then I don't know what to tell you.

Always had a full team, never had an HM slave, and easily beat the games no problem just like everyone else did. Pokemon was always a game made for casuals.

Grinding pokes isn't very hard if you actually know what you're doing. There's also switch-training and the daycare for mons you really can't be bothered to use until a certain level.
Besides, refightable trainers have been a thing since Gen 2.

HMs were actually decent moves in-game in the old gens
>Surf, Strength, Waterfall are top tier moves
>Fly makes shitty Normal/Flying types better by letting them avoid attacks
>Cut, Brick Break decent early game attacks
>Flash has some utility and is optional if you really don't want to use it

The issue is you usually can't delete them until around gym 5, well after they become useless. Also I think you mean Rock Smash, which is much weaker than Brick Break.
The water HMs are similar. Yes, Surf or Waterfall could be useful, but I don't think there is any pokemon that would ever want both at the same time.

Brick Break wasn't an HM retard, you mean Rock Smash which was literal garbage. In addition whirlpool, cut, and defog were absolute fucking garbage wasted moveslots.

Use 2 water mons. I remember using Lanturn and Walrein in gen3 if im not wrong. Otherwise you could teach both moves to your water mon and forget waterfall 1 time all the waterfall zones are clear.

Defog was totally optional and whirlpool sucks, i give you that.

You rerely ever more than 3 or 4 in any dungeon. Just rotate pokemon with appropriate HM moves onto your team when they are needed.
