yes, good story, characters & great new pokemon and alolan formes were almost all universally cool. ultra beasts were a fresh take on legendaries and I liked z-moves more than mega meme shit.

forced cutscenes on every single fucking new route got real tiresome though.

Sun/Moon were some of the most creative and wholesome Pokemon games to date. But it's artistic vision is paired with dumb game design choices like the Rotom Map, the unskippable cutscenes, and the mediocre multiplayer features. Despite all the advertising, it didn't really bring anything together at all.

First pokemon games that I was ever unable to finish. I had to take a long break from ORAS but at least I got through it eventually. I took like three long breaks from Moon and I still got too bored to finish, I never even fought an ultra beast.

They were the first and hopefully only Pokemon games that I felt like I had to finish. I can see why other people like em and I do appreciate the greater emphasis on the story, but they had way too much handholding.

I liked the Ultra Versions better overall. Ultra had a better introduction like when and how you get your starter. And Ultra Necrozma and the Ultra Warp Ride were really sweet. And they actually gave Mina a trial this time. It also served to make Hau into a more competent rival at the end compared to the original. And Ultra has more features in general, like Mantine Surfing and a better post-game. Plus, I thought Lusamine trying to stop Ultra Necrozma was a better motivation for her actions than her just being obsessed with Ultra Beasts.

The pacing was pretty bad at the start of the game. The whole first island is basically a tutorial. Then island two lets you meet a good chunk of the trial captains and get access to some cool new stuff, but I didn't really start enjoying it until the third island and onward.

The family plot was bad to begin with. Lusamine was basically a yandere for Ultra Beasts.And she was likely being effected by Nihilego's venom.

Ultra is better than the vanilla games since Nihilego's Pokedex entry for Sun basically confirms that Lusamine's decent into madness was fake, which is why after Nihilego was beaten that Lusamine wasn't as nuts anymore.

I gave up on SM so long USUM came out and I finished Shield

If you like BW better than BW2 then play SM. If you like BW2 better then play USUM. First games have the better story, third games have more features.

Unfortunately the region kinda sucked, it felt a bit too claustrophobic and railroaded with no freedom to explore too much until after you've already gone from A to B over the whole island which is when you discover there really isn't that much to explore. The cutscenes suck but that's neen discussed to death. Lack of a proper postgame sucks too. I miss the Battle Frontier a lot. Overall I definitely think that while it was mediocre I think GF actually tried unlike the nightmare that is SwSh
