B2W2, Platinum and Emerald are easily the best mainline games. The level curve ruins gen 2 even if almost everything else is good.
USUM Totems and Ultra Necrozma are fun enough to fight that I like gen 7 despite its flaws. FRLG are solid games. Gen 6 and 8 are trash.

4 >> 3 > 5 >> 6 > 7 > 8 > 2 >> 1
Between Platinum, HGSS, PMD:EoS, Ranger:SoA and GS, and the Physical/Special split, gen 4 is easily the best.
Gen 3 and 5 have good mainline games and good spinoffs. 3 is above five because it has a Battle Frontier and introduced abilities.
Gens 6, 7 and 8 each have one good game (SMD, USUM and RTDX) among trash.
I don't like the Johto games very much and Stadium doesn't do anything for me. Gen 1 is a buggy mess.
