It primarily stems from the desire among hardcore fans to play a more mature or otherwise adult-oriented Pokémon game, because they're not kids anymore, and because there's this notion that being incessantly kid-friendly is part of Pokémon's brand, and because Game Freak knows people will always buy Pokémon games no matter what they do, they'll never risk tarnishing that global impression.
