Gen 1's names are fine; at least they're phonetic puns that are unique to Pokémon. The only bad ones are, like, Seel, but even then they still have clever ones like Gastly (Gas + ghastly), Tauros (Toro + Taurus) and one-offs like Ditto and Jynx.

Because "cuny/cony" is an old word for rabbit/bunny. They could have gone with Scorchuny or something at retained the meaning with score, scorch AND rabbit, but they didn't.
