If they do the Platinum dex you can do either turtle or penguin but if they decide to be stupid and stick with DP dex then you're basically stuck with the monkey if you want a fire type, which is pretty much a necessity because grass, ice, bug and steel are everywhere. Unless you want to fuck with vanilla Kanto Rapidash. Otherwise monkey works similar to Blaziken.
If that's not the case, turtle is pretty good and resilient most of the time especially late game, penguin isn't that great imo but it has good resistances and you'll need something that can learn ice beam for Cynthia so it's not a bad choice if you're talking the hardest point of the game.
