Gold/Silver are the 2nd highest selling games in the franchise.
HGSS are remakes so most people don't feel like playing older games again.
even FRLG, which is regarded by most people as one of the best pokemon games, didn't sell that good

Also I agree with you and Gen 5 is based. But people would have been more open to it if there was some actual good mons up front instead of Patrat, Munna, and the elemonkeys. Early game dex is the weakest part of Unova so the ADD kiddies lost interest and it mindbroke Masuda, forever marring the series.
