Not sure about other spinoffs, but Mystery Dungeon's battle system is pretty similar to the maingames
As for romhacks and fangames, you should definitely get into those. If you were wondering, the romhack I'm playing right now is Altair and Sirius (specifically Altair). You may have heard of Vega before. It's basically the prequel to that. It's a good romhack, if you're looking for a romhack featuring Fakemons. Other romhacks/fangames I would recommend are the improvement romhacks made by Drayano, Insurgence, Infinite Fusion (if you have a shitload of storage to fit the game on), Gaia and Radical Red. I've also heard Unbound is supposed to be pretty good
Also, pretty based teams, if a little heavy on "new" Pokemon
