She kept referring to Whismur as Aster and daughter. Whismur in turn cries "mum" or "mama" in Japanese.
Her grandma at some point says she lost someone dear to her, so I assume it was her daughter and then started projecting on Whismur.

I think with pokemon as a setting you have to actually try to not be dark actively (which is what GF/TPCi does) because dark is the default.

Aster, who was supposedly very close to Zinnia. She named her Whismur after Aster. There's never been confirmation on who exactly Aster is, but the two common theories are either a daughter (I'm not too sure about this, Zinnia seems very young) or a lover (makes more sense, but Aster is supposedly a girl and we know mainstream Japan doesn't fuck with that).

ORAS had a few curve balls, really. Wasn't there an official statement saying Aster was mentor? Can't say I remember where it was from, but the game itself does not help regardless.

is correct, Aster was the previous lorekeeper and Zinnia's mentor. Ohmori said so in a Nintendo Dream interview, and I assume that's where the manga got the idea from.
Though why Zinnia talks about her like she was her daughter or something is anyone's guess.
