I started the anime with Hoenn so nope. I'm only on episode 20 right now but the OG anime so far is by far the best season.

I'm convinced pokemania was carried by the anime primarily at least in the west, and people were a bit blind to the drop in quality through johto but the abrupt VA change & costume change & getting rid of misty woke a lot of people up and they dropped the series.
As stupid as it is I honestly think it was the #1 factor ending pokemania.

Indigo was barely more than half the length of the succeeding generations. There is nowhere near enough content in the base games to drag out for three years without having to make shit up (which mostly means recycling forests ad nauseam) on top of almost completely ignoring the story from the mainline games, which also means no supplementary material or expansions of lore or world-building.

The anime does a great job at making the world of Pokemon look fucking boring.

People were already complaining about the drop in quality during the Orange Islands arc but Johto's endless filler is what killed the anime, Pokemania itself died out because of a combination of that and the original target audience growing up.

The anime is victim to the same thing the games are victim to. New games suck and the only way to defend them is to say the games were never good. The new anime are terrible so people say the anime was never good. The original season is very watchable.

I've been watching it too, just finished watching Ash "beat" Sabrina. I was surprised at how funny some of the jokes actually are. I also like how many liberties it takes in how it represents pokemon like the clefairy cult or that time the characters tried to eat a magikarp.

I don't understand how they manage to do it. There's no shortage of characters who could make impactful repeat appearances, but it rarely happens. Gym Leaders are basically local heroes, celebrities, or town leaders in some fashion, but tend to have little involvement other than the casual meetup, serious battle, casual departure over the span of 4-5 episodes.

Entire episodes can be revolved around Pokedex entries alone, but half the time it's "This Pokemon is bullying/being bullied and is (sometimes) generically using it's Type to do it."

I understand it's a kid's show trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator, but they're severely exaggerating that denominator.

The OG is definitely the best. Been rewatching it myself. The characters don't feel like little, child-friendly archetypes. Ash and Pikachu can be real assholes sometimes.

Literally JUST where I left off. The world felt so big and wondrous in Indigo League. Things like the giant Dragonite, ghost Pokémon being an anomaly, Ash and Pikachu dying, getting lost for months on the way to a city, and other oddities really set it apart from something like the Journeys, which isn't even a fucking journey. They just teleport to whatever city or region they want whenever they want.

The gym leaders have been actually one of my problems so far, I hate that none of them know each other, even Brock mentioned having never even seen Misty's sisters and thought that the leader
was just a guy.
I'd have liked to see Surge hug Misty because it'd been so long since they last saw each other, but then when he actually hugged her it was because he thought she was the challenger. A couple of interactions like that would have really helped tie the world together

The Pokémon anime functions like Swish where there are multiple gyms within a region and trainers only need 8 badges. See Gary having 10 badges working up to his 11th in Viridian city. So maybe Ash just coincidentally went to some of the lower ranking ones

It was (alongside the TCG) because the video games were far more expensive (this is why when MAD Magazine mocked it, they focused on the Anime/TCG)

It's a problem when that recycling happens within the same region with the same audience that hasn't stopped watching yet. That's what we've been talking about: The huge degradation of writing quality between the first region and now. My not being part of the target audience has nothing to do with it because I'm not making myself the focus point of the topic.
