Season 1 is good, but Ash runs out of badges then there's a bunch of filler until the league. Orange islands is almost as good but all filler.
Johto is very fillery and the characters are already flanderized, but theres some gems in there especially towards the end like when they go to the unown dimention or when Ash & Gary battle & have a heart to heart.

The Ghost of Maiden's Peak. The floating skulls genuinely creeped me out as a little kid, especially since the Pokedex couldn't define it. Then, when I rewatched the episode as a twenty-something with my best friend, the first Maiden's ghost unnerved me, a little.

I think I'm mixing up these two episodes & probably others around the time. Honestly its been so long idk how well these eps hold up quality wise. I remember blaziken showing up was also noteworthy right after these.

I don't know if I'd say Indigo league is good, but speaking as someone who never watched it as a kid, it is incredibly entertaining. We'll never get anything else like it because it was made before Pokemon exploded in popularity, so they were kind of allowed to do whatever they wanted. Like pic related for example. Also the liberal use of just straight up guns and bombs.

Watching season 1 with thousands of people on Twitch those couple years ago was a fucking trip. Made an already enjoyable experience even better. Wish /vp/ had a weekly rewatch or something.

It's less "they were allowed to do whatever they want" and more "they know it's being broadcasted in foreign country so they keep it watered down purposely so they can potentially offend as few people as possible".

Shudo said somewhere that after electric soldier porygon the higherups were freaking out so they didnt stifle his vision for the movie as much as they otherwise would have. so that phenomenon probably trickled down to the show after that episode too. of course you still have exploding buildings & such in episode 2, times changing is also part of it.
Back in those days you also had shows left and right pushing hard against censorship & whats allowed on tv or what can be put in a kids show, but that's probably more of a western thing.
