So I was rewatching the Ushio and Tora OVA from 1993 yesterday (highly underrated anime btw), and in EP 9 there is an evil Kamaitachi character introduced by the name of Juurou.

When I first saw him, Typhlosion came to mind immediately. Both aggressive hulking Mustelids, the upright posture, even almost the exact same color scheme.

I'm wondering if Gamefreak got some inspiration from Juurou when designing Typhlosion. Personally, I think so.

I know Gamefreak was inspired by DB Frieza (and possibly Giygas) when creating Mewtwo, so I wouldn't be surprised

Hydreigon is a tank. People just overstate similarities and ignore everything else. It has 3 heads but the heads are not identical like King Ghidorah.

I would think you would have a better explanation than the mons not being a 1:1 copy. Zero of the ones you did agree with pass the same smell test you just used for Hydreigon.

Kaijumon are not 1:1 to a specific kaiju. That is why people get Kaijumon so wrong. They just go by aesthetic similarity. If you do that then surely you can find multiple pokemon that resemble one kaiju or the other way around. Kaijumon are designed from the ground up with that concept in mind and they usually have a distinct body shape and moveset.

also, comparing salamance to the shitty 60s devilman anime is... a wild comparison to say the least.
If you want a REAL devilman ripoff, look at Devimon from digimon. Its a straight rip off of Devilman from the manga.
