Random Smogon Question

I've been wondering this for a while. If Smogon is willing to make their format different enough from VGC/general competitive Pokemon with the inclusion of clauses that change stuff....why don't they try to buff/nerf pokemon/moves instead of banning or making tiers?

They actually have done this, theres are things called OMs where people can play a metagame that has some gimmick or change that cant be done outside of showdown like stabmons, scalemons or tier shift.

But they dont in the main metagames because they want their rules to be mostly followable on the actual game. Many non-smogon tournaments follow some of this clauses, and the concept of clauses aren't a fanmade thing either, many stadium-like spin offs offered modes where different clauses applied. They are just making their own.

People always complain about smogon using sleep clause because its not 100% replicable on cart. But the sleep clause is not something smogon invented, its way older than smogon, it was already used in japanese nintendo tournaments in the 90s, way before smogon was a thing.

Same thing with banlists, official pokemon has always banned legendaries and mythicals from most competitive events. Smogon does the exact same, but according to competitive level instead of some lore/obtainability trait unrelated to battling

Basically because the rules need to be replicable on cart, even though they mostly play Showdown.

Competitive level is subjective.
Obtainability is objective. It's not fair to allow Pokemon that you need to get from a certain event.
