Now that remakes are dead and we are only getting remasters from here on out we can safely say HGSS was the worst remake of them all.

HGSS does not address any of the original problems in gen 2. The level curve and distribution is absolute dogshit. The story, despite being a sequel, is literally fighting Team Rocket grunts endlessly and stopping them from getting Giovanni to notice them. Despite the game being an even slower slog than D/P they decided to add more redundant areas to Johto and Kanto. On top of that we had shitty gimmicks like following Pokemon which served no purpose and the retarded Poke Walker.
