It's definitely harder, I had a lot of trouble on my first playthrough. Electric gym leader destroyed me and there are many fully evolved mons early on that outsped and rekt my unevolved shitmons.

It doesn't, the game's problem is not "muh expeereence shure" but rather the fact the game falls apart by the time you hit north Luminose. After that, it's a drawn out,jumbled up mess that nothing short of scrapping and remaking from NL on can fix.
