It's part of their multiverse (LGPE sucking the player in from the real world at the start proves it) but is also irrelevant outside very narrow exceptions (want to bullshit its existence in the games, you can say Arceus created it in the Sinjoh Ruins Event when it created a Creation Dragon for the player as they used real-world images during that acid trip).

I much prefer the slightly gritty, near future, vaguely real world setting with a mix of sci fi and fantasy elements.
The gen 1 games and concept art had this kind of aesthetic that's so unique and I've never really found anything like it since.

It's pretty clear that in Gen I, at least, it was meant to take place in a version of the real world, but I think they abandoned that concept sometime during the development of Gen II, at MOST by Gen III.

There's a lot of real world references in the games too though; Surge being American, Silph Co having a branch in Russia, references to Mew being from South America, etc
