Just understand that while still absolutely playable, a lot of mechanical improvements and quality of life features are absent. Movesets kind of suck, and battles are less challenging. (2 of Lances dragonites only have twister for dragon stab, one has outrage but it was special back then and only 90 power. Reds levels are much lower and his pikachu doesnt even have a light ball. Opponents status moves also fail a lot of the time for no reason which seems unfair in a game already pretty simple/easy. I could go on... Morty's gengar has physical shadow ball etc. Etc.)
If you want a fully polished game with waay more quality of life features such as the physical/special split, unlimited bag etc., and more content both aesthetic such as following pokemon, and substantial like gym leader/e4 rematches, safari zone, adding back the kanto legendaries, fleshed out kanto dungeons, and many more play hgss. In my opinion the only negatives with hgss is the bad soundfont of the ds which makes the music sound worse. Hgss are objectively better in almost every way but if you do want to experience the originals, they have arguably more charm and "soul." Make your own choice both have their merits.
