Gamefreak adapted how Pokeballs open from the anime, so I don't see why collapsing for storage wouldn't also be so.

No, canonincly in the game the pokeball turns into the pokemon, thats why we never see it go back in the trainers hand unless they faint

Yes they do, recently in the farfetch'd evolution episode when Grookey hands a Pokeball to Goh you can see it grow in size and hear the sound. They focus less on it now but it still happens

There's a kid in Mt. Moon Pokémon Centre shows off his belt with 6 pokéballs studded onto it, this has been canon since pre-Gen I child.
