Platinum actually gave these sprites proper animations when they got sent out. All Gen 3 and DP did was either make the whole sprite expand and shrink or move it back and forth.

I'm playing VoltWhite right now and the animated sprites are sexy as fuck. On the small screen you really can't notice any hiccups. Gen 5 really made the battles quicker and more dynamic too. I think the Gengar line has the best battle depiction in Gen 5.

I'd like BW's animated sprites if they used actual animations and having different animations for things like attacks instead of tweening them and making them look like marionette dolls. The Dragon Quest series use sprite animations for their mons' attacks and idles (for the DS versions) and those ended up looking a lot nicer. For Pokemon, I prefer Gen 4's static sprites, since they don't look as messy.

I think the animated sprites are fun especially when the games at full speed but like im gonna say many look like shit or are weak cus gamefreaks dumbass used many base dp sprites for old pokes which many of them look bad they didnt copy the animations some use in plat or hgss like with mewtwo from hgsss and this is evident even in trainer animations from black and white to black and white 2 that gamefreak hadnt figured out how to get individual parts of the sprite to move idependntly in black and white which is why even n moves his arms with his body in black and white but he uses his arms independntly in black 2 white 2 that may be a reason why many black and white sprite for returning pokes animate like shit

GF is guilty of a lot of things, but the change from 2D to 3D definitely helped in flashing out pokemon's personalities.
