I'd bet in coming back to the US: California, Texas or Florida would be my guesses.

However, I'd much more prefer if they went somewhere different, good places would be:

My bet is either California or a Mediterranean country like Spain, Italy or Greece.

I feel if they take breaks from europe, they will likely do something like Mexico or Brazil or Canada, somewhere famous of the Americas with easy culture to reference. Other parts of the americas are too obscure to have a realistic chance imo.
And in Europe, I would say Italy is the most obvious one with the most cultural influence, with Germany and Spain sharing second place.

Conceptually I've always found the idea of basing regions off specific countries limiting since there's a lot of interesting locations you could incorporate
Particularly the US because of its size.

Somehow I think basing it off a section of a real place allows you to ground it in a level of realistic geography. I love Hoenn to death but it is a little odd to have a tropical Okinawa setting with a desert.
Sinnoh, Johto, and Kanto on the other hand are pretty consistent in how biomes and landscapes fit together.

Unless you set it in a location that naturally already has all of those. Australia literally has all of those areas you are describing and more its all about how you fit them together in the natural correct way.

You could still fit another region in France considering that 'Southern Kalos' was hinted and then never explored. Just like how Johto is 'West Kanto,' a southern French region would be like the Johto to Kalos' Kanto, and a game set in the mediterranean would be cool.

I don't think the desert in Hoenn is that bad, it is close to the volcano and it is a warmer region. The transition is decent.
