How were they half assed? They were near direct remakes of the base games, along with a postgame story, dozens upon dozens of greatly missed QoL improvements, among other things.

Tell me why the fuck the battle frontier is bad and useless. In my opinion, it's the best piece of content that the game has to offer outside of online mode

Hell, I'd go as far to say that the entirety of the main story in any pokemon game is worthless.

I don't know, what is bringing YOU back to replaying Omega Ruby instead of Emerald? Not even the online in ORAS is worth shit anymore since it's outdated compared to three other games.
Is it the expanded mechanics and pokedex? Emerald romhacks already have gen 7 pokemon, so even ORAS is outdated now.

Basically, ORAS is worthless and I fucking hate you consoooomers. Game wasn't even worth the pirate

Emerald has a more well balanced story, generally speaking, but that's due to RS being really strong in that regard. Emerald has a couple extra maps, which aren't amazing or anything but they're nice to have. ORAS also has a few more and different maps, but they don't even have some from base RS to begin with either. Deoxys is cool and all, but I do miss being able to catch the other cover legendary (which to my understanding hasn't been done in a first version since GS, has it?), and they'd even have an excuse to just put a room somewhere thanks to Emerald. I strongly dislike RSE's overworld sprites and kind of dislike the music at times, but ORAS is pretty bland on both fronts, I'd almost prefer the memorably bad shit. One last thing, one of the best things about ORAS will fucking die when the 3DS online shuts down, and that greatly upsets me because until somebody develops a fan server I'd be stuck fucking around with streetpass and scanning QR codes to get other people's secret bases, which is a step up from mixing records but still not as good as their PSS implementation.

I'm not talking about the narrative, I'm talking about just playing through the story. It's pretty well rounded, no major points where you get too overpowered or are too low level, so it's always a fair challenge. In addition, there's a lot of options on how you want to go about doing things, despite the game being very linear. The only part that might feel like a slog is the ocean, but I appreciate the experimentation (and also appreciate they never did it again).

HMs were fine. Your in-game team does not need to be minmaxed with perfect movesets. Literal children finished these games by just going through with their starter running a moveset of HMs.

They should have added a part to the Pokemon data structure that said "this Pokemon can do this action", but they didn't for whatever reason. At least HMs were relatively fine, aside from the obligatory surf, the only area of any length that required an HM was rock smash on route 111 (that's a long way between PCs). I'm sure I'm forgetting something in a required dungeon, there's probably a strength puzzle in one team hideout or another. I don't count Victory Road because as the final challenge of the game I'll let that sort of thing slide. All in all, it's not as much of a pain as DP was, for example.

If none of your team can learn Rock Smash, you might have built a bad team. Now, I don't think you should lose a moveslot for that, but I do think you should have a team member who could theoretically do it. Or for another example, if you don't have a water Pokemon or any of the unusual Pokemon that can learn surf as a coverage move, you might have made a shitty team.

ORAS is not a perfect game, and Emerald is still better than it in certain ways, but I feel that the amount of effort that went into them is underappreciated. When you compare it to what we've had to deal with from Gen 6 to the present day the difference in quality is astounding.

Emerald is a nice game but it makes May and Brendan look ugly as shit because their green accents clash with the rest of their outfits. Not to mention the sprite work in Emerald is ass and everything not from Hoenn looks ugly as sin, and even some stuff from Hoenn looks bad too.

The interface is clunky, and the overworld is ugly, but it has pretty tilesets. One thing in OR/AS' favor is that May is, at the very least, cute. Brendan looks like a nu male and it sucks but whatever.

The Battle Frontier will be sorely missed. Something about it was just so damn cool.

ORAS have bad redesigns of maps, half of characters and musics. Worse than Ruby and Sapphire already.
Emerald had slightly improved map assets and ORAS based itself on RS assets and maps which are basically the unfinished games. Emerald is the polished one, there was no reason to not use its maps, or at least to not take the best of both games.
Also I was expecting ORAS to remake the maps in the same way they remade Mauville. And for most of the game they just copy pasted the maps, and some are uglier than in Emerald.

And the XY QoL improvements don't make up for it.
