They don't live in a shithole world as we do anon. The fact the vast majority of people shown, much less pokémon are good-hearted individuals means the pokémon world overall is a higher class of living space compared to ours.
Hell, even the "abusive" trainers end up getting a wake-up call to treat their pokémon better and the villains trying to fulfil their plans are shown to not be completely unsalvagable even when they're trying to eliminate all the water for more land pokémon (side note, I'm 100% sure Torgue from Borderlands 2's Tiny Tina DLC was inspired by Maxie when he sends you to blow up the ocean).
