This is exactly why I still love the Indigo League and by extension the Orange Islands.
The Pokemon anime was at its best when it had actual character and didn't try to stick too hard to the games' canon.
Can we turn this into a thread for all the early weird stuff that reeks of "this was back when the franchise wasn't fully defined yet"?

Yeah, around the time Johto started it became really boring. Late into Hoenn I stopped watching almost entirely just because it became so formulaic. I've seen people recommend X&Y a lot but I didn't see the appeal beyond Ash not being a complete idiot

Doesn't Charizard get dropped in Johto? Around the start? Is he any good in Orange Islands? I know that's when he starts listening to Ash but childhood me remembers a big power boost in Johto.

It does. Modern Pokémon’s blandness really starts in Johto. However, I am enjoying the new series. It still has it’s issues, but it is fun.

I remember Charizard and Ash bonding a lot in the Orange Islands but I don't remember how strong it was in battle.
No idea when he dropped it though. Could've sworn it was somewhere later in that park with all the bigger Charizard where it started training

God damn it, why aren't there more cool psychic type monsters? You've got Alakazam, Reuniclus, Metagross, Malamar, maybe Hatterene? Too many humanoids, weird shitmons, and boring mono-psychics.

Don't tell it's for some dollification shit, right.
I will admit it gave me weird feelings for Sabrina. It made me hate her and her doll as a kid for how mean they were, but Sabrina reminded of a lot of girls I liked since and I still like to see her be happy at the end of it.
