What was the deal with this guy again? Why wasn't he a dragon type from the beginning? He doesn't fly, nor was he able to learn flying type shit up until i dont know what gen. Making him a flying type was really fucking dumb

Doesn’t even get stab on both types for it’s good attack stat (both special). Even if it did, only gen1 move was dragon rage

It's based on some myth in Japan about a weak little fish who would turn into powerful dragon if it could climb a waterfall and jump over some door. If it ever let anger control it then it would lose it's "Dragonhood" and return to the sea. That's what Gyarados is, a really angry former dragon.

In gen 1, dragon was clearly only designed so that Lance's dragonites would act as a tough end-game boss. This is also why they inexplicably have resistances to all the starter types. There wasn't much more thought than that put into it, and also the reason no other pokemon were made dragon type.

That said, gyara being water/dragon would be way too overpowered. Too good of a typing, only 1 weakness (2 after fairy is introduced in gen 6)

Also, in gen 1, the only damaging dragon move was Dragon Rage, which always did 40 points of damage. So Water/Dragon as a type in Gen 1 effectively had no weaknesses.
