I like them, but here's the thing, OP: when you phrase them as "the last good thing", you're basically inciting more people to shit on them harder than they even deserve. I've seen it happen all the time here with genwar boxart threads. I believed that these are very underrated starters that are only being held back by typing and stat distribution, and I hope that people come around for them someday. Out of them all, Emboar is my all-time favorite.

OP here, I don't really think any starters are really bad, but they haven't been as good as gens 1-5.
All I said is that they are leaning too much to the direction of being characters, instead of a species of pokemon. Starters have to be sort of ambassadors for pokemon. The last couple gens lacked starters of this regard.

Serperior is alright design-wise, the typing and movepool is just boring

Emboard NEEDED to be monstrous and more animal like, which is what everyone expected Tepig to wind up becoming. A monster quadruped fire boar would've made Emboar stand out better, along with having a different typing.

Ironically, Samurott would've benefitted from the Lucario-humanoid treatment. It's the logical follow-up from Dewott, and a secondary typing like Fighting or Steel would've been nice.

Gen 5 starters had potential, but it was wasted. They should've gone all out with the themes or presentation.

Nah, it's not as simple as all that. In any case, at least the evolutions would jive better with each line. It makes sense for Samurott to have been a biped given the pre-evos and general theme. While Pignite is biped, they could've gotten away with going back to quads for the evolution liven the size of Emboar, and hopefully a different typing, which is something you missed in my post.

If Emboar was quad but still Fire/Fight then the board would still (rightfully) complain about that too. Even if Samurott got complaints, being better designed with a nice secondary typing to compliment its aesthetic would be worth it.
