Are the first 2 gens worth playing if you played the remakes first?

Absolutely. Gen 1 mechanics are very entertaining and Gen 2's sprites are excellent to look at.

FRLG maybe not so much unless you just wanna see all the jank coding, i.e. wrap working on ghost pokemon but not dealing any damage, just basically stun locking them for a few turns for no reason.
Crystal at least has some minor differences from HGSS that you get a pretty unique experience from. A few GS pokemon are unavailable, like mareep, but a few routes were given neat additions to their encounter pools, like Phanpy or Teddiursa before Violet city.

I'll also add why I like gen I beside the nostalgia fagging. (which I'm defintally guilty of...).
Thanks to the fact the mechanics are slightly different, there's a whole bunch of mons (Parasect, Persian, etc.) that are seriously buffed. (well, not buffed per say, they were just not nerfed yet).

Also I really dig some of the sprite work (I do agree some look silly, but gen I sprites have a unique style to them, it's the proportions I guess? maybe it's nostalgia, but... I don't think it is... it's just a cool style.)

curious about this myself because i started on GBA with gen 3 and really want to buy the old ones and try them out. But I feel like heartgold and soulsilver are so godlike that the originals will feel bland to me.
