The problem is that, over time, generals accumulate too many "regulars" that drive off normal people until they're the only ones left in the thread. Then the general turns into a cesspool of recurring shitposting, people accusing each other of being shitposters, and people who are just there to bitch. Once the general goes away, people have to start making threads about it again, normal people who won't go near the general start using those threads, and the "regulars" lose their influence over the discussion.
