Keep in mind that Pokemon was designed like a traditional RPG in mind, but your "weapons/armor" was your Pokemon.
Spearow/Pidgey are your early game sword
Farfetch'd is that gimmicky sword with an interesting ability that you can make it work in some niche situations
and then Doduo is that "endgame" sword that'll carry you to the rest of the game, outclassing all the other swords you get outside of those "swords" you get by traversing an annoying "dungeon" (Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres)
