To be fair Red's levels are crazy compared to everything else. There's pretty much nowhere you can grind effectively. I never got the argument about the level curve, I never had problems with it, but I guess that's because I only ever trained my team and nothing else pretty much.

You don't NEED to grind. You can beat the E4 and Red without grinding because I did it as a kid brute forcing it and did it as an adult by exploiting type match-ups, using items and having good movesets.

the level curve leads to the part from gym 5 to 7 being incredibly boring and makes changing your team more tedious because no one wants to grind 20 levels for a new pokemon and instead just sticks to the starter and gyarados who will then sweep the game

and what if there is a pokemon you like that you only see later in game? like any ice type or most johto pokemon
for example there is an 14 to 16 level gap between the ice path pokemon and clairs weakest. so instead of trying to use new pokemon which you will have to grind because else they just get outsped and OHKO'd you stick with the same few pokemon you caught in the beginning
