The exodus of writers made them change their minds. Ash winning in alola wasn't bad in itself, it was the way they set up the league and had him win that made it feel cheap. It was like they were incapable of making an actual league storyline without any sort of plot armor (rowlet vs decidueye)

No, it didn’t. The fact that the Alola League had no Elite Four is what made it easier to let Ash win. He could win here and they could simply move on like they did with the Orange League.

I remember some anon saying that Ash winning the Alola league was the equivalent to winning the Special Ed Olympics. Literally anyone could get in and he pretty much won it because everyone else were weak. That and it was a 2v2 instead of 6v6 like the others.
