Sun and Moon did it better with Guzma. After the story he loses his Team Skull moniker and gets a regular trainer theme. Hop still remains as a "Pokemon Trainer" even after the final battle

I really liked Serena/Calem in XY. They start out trying to be the main character since their parents were battlers, but at the end after getting btfo by the MC they realise they do not need to be the strongest.

Barry is an interesting comparison, since unlike Serena, he might be seen as better than you to other characters. When Rowan has Barry go to Snowpoint, he says he needs a tough trainer to go. That can either be because Barry is seen as stronger than you, or Rowan is trying to tard wrangle reverse psychology Barry into focusing. I believe it is the former since the route is no joke. I also could be reading too deep.

It feels like it would be irresponsible for Rowan to send Barry to Snowpoint, if he didn't think he was up to it. Ignore whether or not giving a kid Pokemon is responsible. I haven't replayed Platinum in awhile, but I do like analysing how the characters feel towards you/each other in these games.

Pokemon has had this problem since the start but they don't even try to make it work anymore.

Nobody was curbstomping DICKS on their first playthrough of RBY, largely thanks to him showing up at the absolute worst times and having a spread of Pokes with real stats instead of Early Route Shitmons (TM).
