I honestly prefer having the Elite 4 be linear instead of letting you choose the order in which you fight its members. That way it lets you know which one of the E4 trainers is decisively the strongest.

I prefer how Gen 5 onwards does it. I don’t really see a need to see who’s the strongest when they’re all easy. Helps you decide to strategize based on how your team is built

You still have this in Gen 5, where it's clear that Marshal is the strongest even though you can do them in any order.

Letting the player choose the older doesn't stop one of from from being stronger than the rest in lore

Agreed that Marshall being Alder's apprentice does make it seem like he would be 'member 4', but the plaque in the centre of the league room orders them; Shauntal, Marshal, Grimsley, Caitlin.

Given thats the only official ordering they've ever been given (unless i'm missing something), Caitlin seems to have the strongest point in favour of being member 4.

Nah, Gen 5+ making it non-linear is better since it’s your choice to pick, thus a different experience when doing another playthrough.

I agree with this, but only once they dump monotype trash. Getting to pick the order that’s best for your team is literally the only interesting part of fighting monotype teams in these games so I wouldn’t want to remove it if we’re still fighting them.
