Depends, we talking over the top edge, or the slightly goofy Kingdom Hearts kind? Like, the GameCube titles are about at the upper limit for edginess in Pokemon, generally. I guess some more average shonen stuff falls more in the middle, and that's a matter of taste. That can be fine if there's some buildup to it. Even the early game edge of your average Xenoblade might be a bit too much too fast for Pokemon. You can't get to robots killing people until at least mid-lategame, and only if it's well done (which for Pokemon fangames it never is). On the other hand, Pokemon would totally be justified on having Kirby final bosses, even in the actual games, but they never go that far. PMD literally has Dark Matter as one of their bosses, it's not outside of Pokemon's wheelhouse.
