I feel like too many orbiter Pokémon fans and childhood fad chasers that romanticize Pokémon's early days have their memories of Pokémon filtered. Like you only remember starters, dog and cat Pokémon, the birds and Pikachu's line then tune the fuck out of everything else unless it was used by the original trio or Team Rocket, ignoring everything else like Porygon and Jynx so you create this illusion that Pokémon used to only be monsters with angry socket eyes but Ice Cream, Trashbags, Gummy Imps and Blockhead Penguings shat on everything now.
Pokémon designs always had a range, it's just that more people have internet and can call attention to the entire roster instead of tuning shit out of the dex, going with either what the anime spoonfeeds you or what wasn't a rare encounter. It's only now you call attention to this stuff because new entries can be sparse in some generations more than others so Eiscue doesn't get lost in a crowd of new Pokémon.
