i promise you this:
i will try my hardest to make a pokemon-inspired game of collecting & battling monsters as you explore a land. it might take me two decades for all i care. i'm just tired of watching my favorite franchise turn to shit.
pokemon needs a rival. when the time comes, i will be that rival.

Just focus on the principles which made Pokémon popular: Battling, Collecting and Exploring, especially the latter has gone down the shitter during the last four generations. Plot was always a secondary concern for a good reason and it is no surprise why the plot-heavy games are unpopular. But remember the difference between worldbuilding and plot, the latter is actually important for engagement and depth of the game. Just look at how other games lure the players into thinking about the game and the world of it (which is absolutely a good thing). Just look at Quarantine Crystal and how it handled stuff like Andromega or the fiend of the ilex forest.
