Undertale was a cheap well-made game that can be completed by anyone, designed to both hit emotional moments and big memes. Engineered to basically be the ultimate streamer game and is amazing reactionbait so it spread like wildfire. Hipster tumblry aesthetics appeal to those types, and it's also super "progressive." At the same time, it isn't so niche to put most normalfags off. Also has big lore for online discussion purposes and very well-made music.

As for all of those industry connections he somehow made, fuck if I know. Shit's crazy.

You would think so but there have been a ton of successful indie guys who never suddenly became best buddies to the big boys like Toby has. Ffs he visits Sakurai's house to play smash with him and makes music for pokemon on a whim? I think of other big recent successes like Team Cherry and there's clearly something Toby is doing to move up in the industry most others aren't.

I'd chalk it up to success in Japan. I don't think Hollow Knight got anywhere near as popular as Undertale did overseas.

Forgot to mention, even internationally Undertake trumps Shovel Knight's popularity. As far as indie games go, Undertale is a beast of its own that was probably only outdone by Minecraft. In that sense, Notch is more or less a household name in the same way that Toby is, just that he took his fame in a different direction.
