In Pokemon you don't play a character, you play you and your team is dependent on you and what you want to become is dependent on you. The main story is just an extended tutorial. If you want to "catch them all", well role-play as a cathchemallem, if you want to go around just defeating wild pokemon play as a spottemgottem, if you want to be a battler there's the online, if you want to be a breeder there's the egg thing, if you want the comfy animal crossing there are the secret bases in some gens. You can't do this type of things in Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy or even Skyrim. Pokemon functions well as a solo RPG and as a limited multiplayer RPG.
