Well, for some Pokemon, you really don't have a choice. Look at Hippopotas, for example; you can only catch him in the Maniac Tunnel at a 5% encounter rate, with the other 95-fucking-percent being Geodude. The only way this is remedied is by actually going through the effort to catch 10 unique Unown forms in the cave next to it, which only boosts it by another 5%. Jesus christ.

I had the Diamond and Pearl Guidebook when I was a kid and first played through the games. As I was going along I made sure to check back and read up on the book to see what I could find, where I could catch some Pokemon that I wanted but didn't know the location of, and used it to help me get good scores in contests. It also taught me about shit like shinies, evs, etc. It was probably one of the most fun experiences I've ever had with any game and I still own that Guidebook to this day.

Even worse; look at THIS. It's what the Maniac Tunnel looks like before you catch 10 Unown. There's even less reason to explore this tiny, tiny cave than usual, because once you see like 5 Geodudes when running around here, you'll figure they're the only fucking thing in the damn place.

Oh yeah, and in every single other game except SwSh, you can only get it post-game. With Dream World, you could've gotten it at pretty much any point as long as you had a Rock-, Ground-, Steel-, or Fighting-type.

I usually just look at what pokemin are new so I can choose my fire/water/grass trio and get an idea of what else I might use. I do catch things other than the plan, but try to avoid overlap with what I know I'll use later.

I didn't play Swooshie, but if I went in blind expecting to get a cool chameleon starter, I'd be pretty fucking disappointed. Then I'd know not to bother and just catch a Cramorant instead.
