Pokemon started as video games series
starting from Gen3, the video games became a low priority media with focus on merchs
from 2013, the games became the lowest priority pokemon media with merchs and anime being the highest priority because they found out that plushes make more money than their games

If you don’t think that capitalizing off of Pokémania in Gen 1 with merch of literally anything from cereals to plushies as them running a “plush business”, you’re fooling yourself. It has always been a priority to sale merch too. I remember so many people thinking the anime had a game adaption and not the other way around because of so much merch and advertising.
