I'll keep my opinion about the creature designs to myself, but in terms of gameplay design, the Unova mons are some of the best.
Even mons that rarely make it to endgame teams, like Watchog, Liepard, and the monkeys, have a purpose. They're good for the point in the game you have them, and you're expected to replace them with better mons later on.
Because of this, most mons do get used. Only exceptions are things like Heatmor, Cryogonal, Beeheeyem, Klinklang, Emolga, Basculin, Maractus, Sawsbuck, Alomomola... Things that aren't really good for the point in the game where you get them, or where you usually have something better already.
Volcarona, Zoroark, and Hydreigon also aren't on most casual teams for obvious reasons.
