Every single one of the USUM ones was more challenging than any gym/e4/champion battle I can think of. Cope harder.

This. Gyms and e4 battles in the old games were just "press A to win with type advantage". The totems actually required some semblance of thought, you couldn't just mash A after the first one.

Only if he's a participant in the tournament. If you don't invite him or he doesn't randomly show up, you fight someone else for your last battle. Also he loses his champion trainer class.

You haven't been able to "sequence break" since Platinum and even then the game enforces the sequence break itself since the badges aren't ordered correctly.
You'd have to be trying NOT to sequence break Gen 1 and 2, though. Idiot.

You're fucking kidding right? Platinum forces you to sequence break the gym leaders but there is literally no other way to do them. That has nothing to do with agency at all.

It was probably a mix of memory issues in Gen 1-2 and no one caring enough to change it. Plus, most many jrpgs end in a permanent state before the final fight so maybe they wanted to go with that.

But yeah, its good that it changes in SM, not a super big change(you still have to face the E4 and a contender instead of a champion) but still nice, though it does leave the question of how the system works if the champion has to re-challenge the E4 constantly.

IIRC an NPC on the Isle says they get news there slower than the rest of the region, specifically referring to the player becoming champion.

Yeah I agree, despite Gen 7's shortcomings like the linear region, the abundance of cutscenes and shit, I still actually felt like I had to think for a moment about some of the totems, which is more than I can say of any of the gyms
