Last time I played Crystal, I actually did pick Chikorita just to see if the memes were true. Proceeded to have the most fun playthrough of a gen 2 game I've ever had.

Charmander and Chikorita are late bloomers. Weak against the first two gyms but shine later on.

Meganium with Body Slam destroys everything in the game that isn't a Ghost-type.

I did pick you in my last HeartGold, and in a Crystal run before that. Your barrier moves just aren’t practical to use over damaging moves, which the other two can do better. The only powder move you get is PoisonPowder, and there’s a similar lack of variety in the rest of your moveset. Your defensive stats are solid, but there are others who can take a hit about as well and dish out more damage than you can. Every time I pick you I find myself using the others on my team more because they can fill almost any role better than you can.
But I still love you.

I was about to say "it will struggle with Steel-types" until I remembered that there were barely fucking any in the game, so yeah, it will be fine with that moveset provided you have a couple of other team members that can deal with tricky stuff.

Yeah, Chiko's support options are great, but not ideal for the way many people play the main campaign. If it was a Colosseum type scenario where every battle was Doubles, Meganium could see a lot more use in that capacity.

Factually incorrect, Crocanaw holds up the best. Bayleaf only does the "best" against Miltank because it's so bad that you will be forced to have something else on your team, and by virtue of the same sorts of things generally beating Faulkner, Bugsy, AND Whitney, you are very likely to have trained something that outs Miltank.

It's cute, it's my favorite gen 2 starter, but it's bad.
IMAGINE being such a shitty grass type that you are forced to run bulky grass stall without Leech Seed unless you breed it on.

Yeah, Colosseum is great for Bayleef. Barrier moves are a lot more useful when you still have another Pokémon who can attack in the same turn, and Sunny Day is good for weather combos

I love Chikorita but that's not saying much. Geodude mogs all three of you by that metric since it crushes Falkner, Bugsy, and Whitney with ease. Prior to Gengar getting Levitate it'd have mogged Morty too come to think of it.

Is Meganium had leech seed by level up it would be 200x better to use in game. Poison power/toxic and leech seed would make it a solid choice in game.

But Chikorita doesn't evolve until lv16, that means I won't have a Bayleef until some time after Whitney
Regardless, the winning move against Whitney is Growl, Sandattack and status ailments. Chikorita gets at least one of those things (more depending on which gen you're playing, as gen 4 Chiko gets Poisonpowder earlier. Gen 2 on the other hand gets Reflect earlier which can come in handy).

Because I have more fun that way. Catching and using many different monsters and finding uses for all the moves they can learn is more fun to me than running back and forth in a patch of grass to make my starter Pokemon an unstoppable demigod for the rest of the game.

That's a good idea anon, poison is very rare, and bug has only 1 meta move which is u-turn, flying types don't even use flyint attacks anymore most of the time

So yeah, your idea is sincerely very good, the only thing against it is that GameFreak might not like Venasaur having to share what makes him meta with Meganium
