Read up on the likely terrain you will be facing ahead of time, and look at the available shitmons at your disposal that can abuse said terrain.
If you get stuck on a gym or something, always remember that the AI is fucking horrendous in this game and can be gamed like there's no tomorrow. Not spam agility bad, but close. I'm talking a Goldeen with lightning rod literally cannot be hurt by any opponent with an electric attack unless they also have a grass attack to make it a 50/50.
Meowth is worth a team spot between Pickup and Pay Day shenannigans providing you endless cash, since the game also gyps you on money. Persian Fake Out is also legitimately one of the best blanket answers to random bullshit in the game.
Flame Body Magcargo is a fucking champ through the midgame as a blanket physical check and a pivot.
Bring some sort of stress relief because the plot is slow, plodding, and infuriating, besides being cringe, and you have to sit through all of it.
