Unova had the best individual routes, but at the cost of the all routes being arranged in a linear straight line instead of a real map like the previous Gens

Unova has the best routes, CT actually has some fun dungeons since the camera hides things better in small caves.
Other than that the only time i remember really enjoying exploration was Blazing Emerald, which added some extra dungeons to Hoenn but made HMs deletable so you could just teach what you needed when you needed it.

Map design is a meme. Who gives a shit if you backtrack in a slightly different permutation of a square or rectangle. It's all the fucking same. Everything is sectioned off with retarded ass little classroom hallway doors, which is an example of "muh absrackshun" you zealots always harp on about.

I like a bit of backtracking, returning through an area more than once makes it more memorable. Especially if you can come back open up new paths out of it later

Gen 3.
Going around in Gen 3 was the fucking best, especially the forest with the secondary bike paths and the very tall grass with trainers moving as you do.
