Whatever the gen 9 gimmick is, it's gonna be forced into gen 5.

Now they're gonna save the interesting gimmick for gen 10 for the anniversary and for the kalos remakes.
That will probably be the trainer literally turning into the seventh pokemon team member, simply based on the fact NPCs reference this in X and Y.

This one is different by virtue of legends being a thing. It didn't have to be. BDSP would've gotten them the sales they wanted but they chose to hand that off to someone else while doing something that could easily bite them in the ass since it's of course going to get a bigger budget than mainline but also doesn't possess the same established playerbase as mainline.
