What's the point of this? Does Game Freak understand that not everyone wants to use the same 6-12 Pokemon over and over again? Do they not understand that Ice should have actual resistances? Do they not understand that stat-conflicting movepools are utter shit?

If anything, Pokemon have just been getting better competitively.
Yeah, every gen has shitmons, but there's never been a gen that was just shitmons at the time.

It's obvious that not every Pokemon is not supposed to be top-tier but wanting a Pokemon to not be shitted on by Game Freak is a valid reason. There are far too many Pokemon with blatantly awful stats and movepools that it makes you wonder if Game Freak legitimately plays favorites with some Pokemon and has diarrhea explosions on others. That or some are made shitty because others are blatantly too powerful and that is what they consider to be balancing.

It's blatantly obvious that they do Venusaur has been confirmed to be Masuda's and Miyamoto's favorite and Charizard is obviouslyTPC's favorite (or alteas one of their favorites). It's no coincidence that those two have become VGC Staples as soon as Game Freak started seriously paying attention to competitive. To drive the point home compare them to Typhlosion and Meganium, who were given the most useless and barren movepools out of any starter Pokemon (even being robbed of moves that other Volcanomons and Flowermons automatically get.)

Recently, GF has been throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks a lot.
I'm pretty sure there's more gen 7 and 8 lines with signature moves and/or abilities than ones without them.

Unfortunately, stat-conflicting movepools and Power Gem/Aura Sphere's shit distributions were many of the things that stuck.
