I think Gen 8 was an improvement over Gen 7, which isn't saying a lot but that makes them not the worst

well I never played SS so I can't say, but XY does have secret areas. not a lot, but they're there. despite a lot about xy being a step down, the map design is very similar to gen 5's.

? If i play a jrpg, I expect cutscene, boss battles, exploration, grinding, sidequest and similiar elements that define the genre. Dont play pokemon if you dont' like jrpgs.
And nope, xy and swsh does not have extra areas, unlike gen 7
